Owen was approached by The Guardian team to create an energetic cover illustration for The Observer Magazine's feature article about Susan Smillie's year-long voyage alone at sea. With the newly enlarged front cover of the magazine to nearly A3 size, this offered Owen the opportunity to create something that would really stand out and create an impact.
Taking inspiration from traditional Japanese woodblock prints, Owen created a dramatic design that referenced experiences from Susan's trip, including high-seas and lightning storms. The sense of scale of Susan's tiny boat against powerful stormy seas reflects the enormous challenge she faced on her one woman mission to sail around Europe.
This was then handcrafted as a multi-layered paper artwork and brought to life as a looped animation by in-house animator Simon Roberts
Cast Away is now available to purchase as a signed print from Owen's shop
